Family-friendly attractions in Swadlincote

CONKERS is one of the most well-known and popular family attractions in Swadlincote, England, located in the heart of the National Forest in Derbyshire. This adventure and nature park spans approximately 48 hectares and offers a unique combination of outdoor activities, interactive learning opportunities, and nature experiences that appeal to visitors of all ages. Since its opening in 2001, CONKERS has become a central attraction in the region, promoting both entertainment and education in an environment that highlights the beauty and diversity of the National Forest - one of the largest reforestation projects in the UK.

Nature experiences in the National Forest

The park is divided into two main areas: the Discovery Centre and the Activity Centre, each offering different experiences. The Discovery Centre is a large, covered visitor center that serves as a starting point and houses a variety of interactive exhibits. Here, visitors can explore nature and science in a playful way, with exhibits on topics such as ecology, geology, and the forest wildlife. The exhibits are designed to appeal especially to children, with interactive elements like buttons, sounds, and visual effects that make learning an experience. Although some visitors note that parts of these exhibits have become somewhat dated over the years, the center remains an important place to raise awareness about the environment.

Adventure park for children and adults

The outdoor Activity Centre is the heart of CONKERS, offering a wealth of adventure opportunities. One of the highlights is the "Barefoot Walk," a sensory path where visitors can walk barefoot through various materials like mud, gravel, and bark mulch to experience nature up close - although the contents of the stations may vary depending on the season. The "Fairy Labyrinth" is another popular feature, a magical maze of hedges and hidden paths that transports both children and adults into a magical world. For more action-packed experiences, there is the "Assault Course," an obstacle course that challenges skill and teamwork, as well as the "Ranger Activities" ranging from guided nature explorations to archery.

Interactive learning opportunities at Discovery Centre

Another distinctive feature is the "Enchanted Forest Adventure," an area with treehouses, rope bridges, and slides integrated deep into the forest, sparking the imagination. This adventure area uses the natural surroundings of the National Forest to create an immersive experience where visitors can climb between the trees and enjoy the view. The park also offers a small train, the "Conkers Express," which allows for a relaxed ride through the grounds and is particularly popular with families with young children.

Outdoor activities in Swadlincote park

CONKERS places a strong emphasis on nature and sustainability, reflected in its location in the National Forest - a project that has planted millions of trees since the 1990s to regenerate the landscape. The park is surrounded by lush forests, meadows, and small lakes that host a rich wildlife, including birds, squirrels, and occasionally deer. Trails crisscross the grounds, inviting exploration of the surroundings, while picnic areas and quiet zones offer the opportunity to fully enjoy nature.

For dining options, there are several choices, including a café in the Discovery Centre offering a selection of hot meals, snacks, and drinks, often with regional ingredients. There is also a shop selling souvenirs, toys, and eco-friendly products that align with the park's mission. Regular events, such as seasonal festivals in the fall or winter, enrich the offerings and attract additional visitors looking to participate in special activities.

I wasn’t sure whether it was the time of year, but we went to Conkers last week and things just felt a little dated. Signs broken etc. The kids had a good time, but it was expensive for what it was, and I guess you just expect things to be repaired/kept up to date. We went a few years ago and it looks like the place has just been left to age.

Avoid the 4D theatre! Broken glasses and strange film. Enjoy instead all the fabulous outdoor activities!

Not too far from me. Just under a hour A few parents decided to go here at the end of Feb. Was three groups of us all together Was muddy this time of year so deffo wear some old trainers and clothes and bring some spare to go home in In by the entrance there is a gift shop and shocked to see it stocked useful items. Such as gloves and hats (for the current season) and well priced items. Decent sized cafe and we even visited the 4D cinema which is there. Wasn’t overly impressed with this as the sound and visuals were not clear. Out side there at lots of play areas. Lots of things for the kids to do and in quite a few locations around the park. Sensory area. A small maze. Lots of slide and kid assault courses There is a payable more intense area if you wanted to go in. Looked quiet and would be worth the extra £5-10 per child The train ride was included. Takes lots of people at once so you don’t have to wait long I would think in the summer this place would be very busy BUT as it’s so big there is plenty to see and do and lots of room for everyone. Was very impressed on how clean the place was, of course there were a few litter bugs but this can’t be helped. Great place to come and visit. Even has free parking. It’s not like other places that want to rip you off or charge you the earth for coming. It’s a place that wants you to enjoy the outdoors and we did very much Keep up the great work guys

We came here on the off chance as our plans change due to bad weather. It looked brilliant from the website. They have an indoor activity centre and a soft (not so soft) play center. They actively center 90% of the things that were broken. I'm sure in better weather where u can venture outside it would have been a lot better but the inside part wasn't great at all

It was fantastic day out for my 3 boys aged 9,7,3. We got a Groupon for £20. We spent 3 hours there. Some of the equipment didn't work as intended but with a Groupon it was well worth it. A train ride was included. High ropes trek was only £5 additional per person but you have to buy at the discovery centre, we didn't know that and the kids were too tired to go back. So make sure you buy that beforehand. The 4d cinema experience on environmental issues for kids was absolutely amazing. I'm sure it would be even more amazing in the summer but price is costly if paying full price. Staff were helpful and friendly. Free parking on site.

Good day out overall! Outdoor activities were really enjoyed by my 5 year old. Some parts are looking pretty tired though which is a shame.

We went for the light display which was beautiful. Out of season there's quite a few things closed (2nd cafe, stalls, and some of the features were not at their best) but we still had a great time wandering around & the light trail was beautiful..

Needs a lot of work doing on it as the educational area had a lot of things that didn't work. Some of the walks were closed, but I'm unsure whether this was due to the weather or not, but there is no indication of this when you arrive or on the website
